Amy Sherald & Kehinde Wiley

“Portraits are about revealing aspects of an individual... allowing us to look at people that are often invisible in a different light.” Kehinde Wiley (Obama)

“... so it’s about a painting convincing us about our undeniable place in the world. There’s a power relationship here”. Kehinde Wiley (sergeant)

Jaz Graf uses a variation of mixed media’s to convey her themes of identity, culture, and location with tools from textiles to paper making and many other printmaking and lithographic techniques. In some of Jaz Grafs’ work, she ties identity to land, with a specific focus on bodies of water. She discussed how she related the Hudson River, to another river where her mom grew up in Thailand. These parallels in the two countries she lived in reflected her own dual-nationality. Another example of her focus around identity is the use of the orange robes of Thai monks. Jaz Graf uses direct intention in her minimalistic, yet richly textured work to honor her own relationship to culture and identity.
