Finkelstein Chapter 2: Manners
"Being well mannered and socially adept enables the individual to avoid being a joke and minimizes the risk of humiliation..."
I chose this quote because in this sentence she was referring to 15th century Europe but this view manners is still relevant today. Your manners and how you carry yourself gives people the first insight about who you are and what you represent. If you carry yourself as a slob or as a joke, no one will take you seriously. The manners you possess could also determine the opportunities you open up and the opportunities you take away. People will only respect you and treat you as much as you respect and treat yourself.
"The well-mannered individual should not laugh too loudly, should not scratch, or sit with the legs splayed out, neither should individuals clean their teeth with a knife, nor cough when when others are speaking. "
I chose this quote because after reading all the things that you should not do in order to be "well-mannered" you almost feel as if you can't do anything.Yes manners are very important but to hold hundreds of standards all the time can be very absurd. Maybe when you are out with your friends you can let out a belly laugh of a burp. A part of being well-mannered is knowing how to conduct yourself and control your body. Knowing and how to speak and act in certain situations goes hand in hand with that. Holding yourself to these standards all the time could make you look boring, prudish and sometimes might make people not want to hang out with you anymore. Being mannered is both easy and hard at the same time.
